Markets need us. We serve them.

The core business of the Aromatic Chemicals business line is the production of aromatic hydrocarbons, chemical raw materials such as anthracene, carbazole and other specialty chemicals which are used in a wide range of industries: from paper and dye manufacture through use as a fuel additive to the production of electrical insulating varnishes, synthetic resins, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
A raw material with heritage
The carbolic oil from coal tar contains the raw material indene. This component makes the oil particularly attractive for the production of hydrocarbon resins. Indene has a long heritage at RÜTGERS. This aromatic ingredient was discovered in 1889 by RÜTGERS scientist Adolf Spilker, setting the stage for the first ever synthetic resins made from coal tar. Today, indene remains an important basic material for resin production by our Resins & Modifiers business line at the Duisburg site.
