Girls' Day at RÜTGERS

Castrop-Rauxel, April 26, 2012

Twelve students explore professional training as laboratory technologists/technicians, chemistry technicians and industrial mechanics.

The training department at RÜTGERS Germany GmbH opened its doors on April 26, 2012 for Girls’ Day, the nationwide career day for girls. Twelve young women from Castrop-Rauxel and the surrounding area seized the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and perform experiments that form part of professional training programs in the chemical industry. They measured substances in the chemistry lab and tested their skills with hammers, chisels and files in the mechanical workshop.

The girls aged between 14 and 16 separated mixtures, filled test vessels, and pipetted and analyzed chemical raw materials. The prospective industrial mechanics also produced a metal candle holder with help from trainees. All these tasks kept the visitors busy for nearly six hours and afforded fascinating insights into the various careers available in the chemical industry. The trainers also gave the teens tips on choosing a profession and applying for jobs. The young visitors went on a tour of the plant to see the facilities where trainees learn the ropes. “I really liked it because I got to try everything out myself,” said Sema Öztürk, of Otto Hahn high school in Herne, of her “trial traineeship” at RÜTGERS.
