Naphthalene

Naphthalene is an essential raw material for many chemical processes – and is therefore indispensable for many industrial sectors. We operate the largest naphthalene production plant in the world at our site in Castrop-Rauxel. Where every year up to 70,000 tonnes of this versatile raw material are produced. Up to 50,000 tonnes are produced by the rest of the company’s plants.
A raw material used by many industrial sectors
Naphthalene is, in addition to ortho-xylene, an important raw material for synthesising phthalic anhydride, which is used for making polymers. Furthermore, phthalic anhydride is also used in the pharmaceutical, agricultural and dyeing industries. The raw material naphthalene is also to be found in many other sectors: For example it is put into tanning agents used for leather products or for buildings where it is used as an additive for superplasticisers, which is needed for increasing the fluidity of concrete.
So that we can optimally respond to our customers and the needs of the market, RÜTGERS is subdivided into seven lines of business: Basic Aromatics, BTX/PA, Handy Chemicals, NOVARES® & Modifiers, Aromatic Chemicals, Trading and InfraTec.
