Naphthalene

Naphthalene is an essential feedstock for many chemical processes—and is therefore indispensable in many industries. The world’s biggest naphthalene plant operated at our site in Castrop-Rauxel produces up to 70,000 metric tons of this versatile raw material each year. Our other plants produce additional quantities of up to 50,000 metric tons.

Feedstock for many industries

Naphthalene, alongside ortho-xylene, is an important feedstock for the synthesis of phthalic anhydride, which plays a role in the production of plastics. Phthalic anhydride is also used in the pharmaceutical, dyestuff and agroindustries. In addition, naphthalene is used in many other areas—for example, in the leather industry where it is used in tanning agents, or in construction where it is needed as an additive for superplasticizers that enhance the flow properties of concrete.

In order to best satisfy customer and market requirements, RÜTGERS is organized into seven business lines: Basic Aromatics, BTX/PA, Handy Chemicals, Resins & Modifiers, Aromatic Chemicals, Trading, and InfraTec.
